Cyclone Alfred Warning: How To Safeguard Your Vehicle

04 Mar 2025

While cyclones are unpredictable, current modelling from BOM has been accurate to date which is showing Cyclone Alfred heading for South East Queensland (SEQ). It has been a long time since a cyclone crossed the coastline as far south as Brisbane and we thought it necessary to provide information about how to protect and minimise the damage to your vehicle in the event of a cyclone. Here are some steps you can take to safeguard your vehicle:

1. Move the Car to a Safe Location

  • Garage or Shelter: If possible, park your car inside a garage or an enclosed structure. This provides the best protection from strong winds and flying debris.
  • Avoid Trees or Power Lines: If you don’t have access to a garage, park your car away from trees, large structures, or power lines that could fall or cause damage during the storm.

2. Use Storm Shutters or Covers

  • If parking in an open area is your only option, use storm car covers or heavy-duty tarps to shield your vehicle from debris. This helps prevent scratches and dents.

3. Keep Windows Closed

  • Ensure all windows are tightly shut to prevent rain from entering the vehicle and causing water damage.

4. Elevate the Car if Possible

  • In flood-prone areas, it may be helpful to park your car on high ground or on a raised surface to avoid water damage. However, avoid parking near steep areas that could result in landslides or flooding.

5. Secure Loose Items Inside the Car

  • Remove any loose items, such as antennas, roof racks, or unsecured items inside the vehicle that could be damaged or blown away.

6. Avoid Driving

  • If a cyclone is approaching, avoid driving the vehicle as much as possible. Stay indoors and wait for the storm to pass before assessing the damage to your vehicle.

By taking these precautions, you can help minimise the chances of your vehicle sustaining severe damage during a cyclone.
